The palace was furnished and decorated in 1808 according to the fashion of the day. The Empire style was the height of fashion in France during the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte (1804-1815), whose brother Louis Napoleon took the throne of Holland. The grandeur of the style reflected Napoleon Bonaparte’s power in Europe and his aspirations as the self-styled successor to the emperors of ancient Rome and the pharaohs of the Egypt he had conquered. The  Royal Palace has one of the most comprehensive collections of original Empire furniture.
