The Prince and the City

William V in Amsterdam

Now on show

Till 17th of september the Royal Palace Amsterdam is hosting a spectacular exhibition titled: "The Prince and the City - William V in Amsterdam". An exhibition which recreates the most significant event of the 18th century. From May 30th to June 4th, 1768, the city council of Amsterdam is hosting some very important visitors in the Town Hall now known as the Royal Palace; Stadtholder William V, Prince of Orange-Nassau, and his wife, Wilhelmina, Princess of Prussia. The majestic Town Hall temporarily gained a royal atmosphere.

Central to the exhibition is the confrontation between the most powerful person and the most powerful city in the country; a story of royal and political spectacle leading up to a turbulent time. With dinners, banquets, ceremonial carriage tours through the city and a spectacular ball in the Citizens' Hall, Amsterdam's city council pulls out all the stops for the brand-new princely couple. Amsterdam needed the powerful stadtholder.

Wars and commercial competition are hampering the city’s economic growth, poverty is on the rise, and there are grumblings of dissatisfaction with the city council. For his part, the young William V wishes to establish a foothold in this mighty city, and so the two political powerhouses have sought each other out. For the people of Amsterdam, the stadtholder’s reception offers a welcome distraction in uncertain times. For a brief moment, all seems right with the world.

In the midst of a flag parade, illuminated facades, and festivities, the mayors of Amsterdam and Stadholder William V cordially greeted each other, unaware that the unrest of the late eighteenth century would culminate in a conflict between Patriots and Orangists, leading to a constitutional upheaval.

"Who shall dance with the princess?

In sound and vision, visitors can relive the historical splendor of the most extraordinary ball held in the Citizens' Hall, where over a thousand guests from home and abroad danced into the late hours.

The exhibition features the two specially crafted stadtholder chairs, which were created specifically for this five-day reception and are returning to their original place after 255 years.

The exhibition showcases remarkable collection pieces of William V from the Royal Collections of the Netherlands, including his Windsor uniform, ornamental sword, and five extraordinary portraits, among which are masterpieces painted by Johann Friedrich August Tischbein (1750-1812)

The room where William V dined is recreated to showcase a royal banquet, complete with porcelain service, silverware belonging to William V, and impressive sugar confectionery specially crafted for the exhibition by renowned pastry chef Jeroen Goossens.
